Brochthausen

An overcast evening in July took me to Brochthausen, a small village tucked among gentle hills directly on the former inner German border.

Black and white photo of a church with a tall, pointed steeple topped by a cross, rising above a cluster of half-timbered houses. Two clock faces are visible on the tower. The steep tiled roofs of the surrounding buildings lead the eye up to the spire against a cloudy sky.

After climbing a hill outside the village, the landscape opened out into wide, harvested fields rolling gently towards the wooded hills. A narrow path cut through the fields while, in the distance, wind turbines caught the last of the day’s light.

A paved path runs through golden grain fields bordered by strips of green grass, leading toward a wooded valley at dusk. Three wind turbines stand faintly on the horizon beneath a heavy, dramatic sky streaked with soft pink light breaking through the clouds.

Rolling farmland under an overcast sky, with harvested golden-brown fields curving across gentle hills. Patches of dense green woodland separate the fields, and a dirt track winds through the valley toward small rooftops visible in the distance. Heavy grey clouds dominate the upper half of the frame, hinting at approaching rain.

The way back led through a short section of woodland, after which a sun-drenched path wound down again towards the village.

In the distance, a church spire and rooftops of a small village are visible through the gap in the foliage.
