Heather now cover what was once the largest Bronze and Iron Age burial ground in northern Central Europe. The Pestruper Gräberfeld, located south of Wildeshausen, contains over 530 grave mounds dating back to around 900–200 BC. Most of these mounds are low and unassuming, barely reaching a metre in height and easily mistaken for natural undulations in the land.

Today, the site is protected as much for its ecology as its archaeology. To conserve the landscape the heath is regularly grazed by sheep.
